Letter About the Fundamentals of U.S. Government

Dear family,

I am adjusting well to university life, and the classes are exciting. In the short period of time, I have been here, I have learned a lot about the United States and its citizens. In this letter, I’d like to explain the fundamentals of the United States government briefly, a topic we recently explored in one of my classes.

The United States Constitution is the supreme law of the country and the foundation for all government powers (History.com Editors, 2). It establishes checks and balances in the government to ensure the protection of all constitutional rights. The Constitution was ratified about 200 years ago in response to the need for a government with enough authority to operate at the national level without limiting citizens’ rights (History.com Editors, 2). In a nutshell, it lays out the government’s strategy for striking a balance between human rights and civic order. In the years following the revolution, the U.S. government system had concentrated the most power. However, this did not work well for the government’s hands, necessitating the need for the Constitution to establish a better form of government. There have been 27 edits to this edition (History.com Editors, 2).

I have also learned several American ideals. One of these ideals is democracy. Democracy is a form of government in which all qualified citizens have a vote. It is an American ideal that all citizens of the United States participate equally in the adoption by elected representatives of legislation that affects their lives (Government and you, 5). The United States is a presidential democracy, which means that the President is elected by the people transparently and fairly and that the President becomes the head of state and government after the election. Democracy guarantees that the average person’s voice is heard and that their concerns are answered. It is the right of people to rule their own lives. According to the United States Constitution, everyone has the right to citizenship, energy, and land (History.com Editors, 2). Furthermore, the hierarchy of human freedoms occupies a key role. For the average citizen, independence means being able to choose your life partner, the work you want to do, your style of dressing, and your way of life without fear of discrimination.

A current event that demonstrates democracy is the presidential elections held on November 3, 2020. Donald Trump was the Republican nominee, while Joseph Biden was the Democratic candidate. Despite losing both popular voting (approximately 6 million) and the anticipated elections in the College, President Trump’s refusal to grant the elections set a bad precedent (Sanger, 1). Despite the President’s slim prospects of success, his continued efforts were a daring move to maintain power and showed his rejection of the people’s will. In a representative democracy, the people’s vote must be respected, which means that the election winner must be elected President since this is the people’s will. Nonetheless, the President-elect, Joseph Biden, was sworn into the grievance of the outgoing Head of State as soon as votes were validated and college votes were reaffirmed (Sanger, 1). This shows that the American government greatly values democracy.

Additionally, United States values civil liberty as another ideology. Under the U.S. Constitution, civil liberty is a fundamental human right that is shielded from government infringement. It is an inalienable right guaranteed by the United States Constitution that protects citizens from more powerful individuals or organizations (Victor, 3). Civil liberty differs from civil rights in that it is a form of protection by the government, while civil liberty can be thought of as liberation from government control. There are a variety of essential liberties that the government is not allowed to restrict. Religious freedom, freedom to assemble, freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and freedom to petition the government is all included in the clause (Victor, 3). These five freedoms are regarded as necessary elements of a free society.

In my stay in the United States, several constitutional liberties have benefited and affected me as a student. An example of such freedom is Title VII of the civil rights Act of 1964. The Act protects job seekers and employers from discrimination based on ethnicity, color, religion, sex, or national origin (SHRM, 4). This Act has dramatically impacted my stay in the United States since I have been able to apply for part-time jobs on campus and have been given the same chances as anyone else. Furthermore, the law guarantees that all students can have equal opportunities for future employment without fear of discrimination (SHRM, 4). This gives me the confidence and motivation to work hard in my studies as I am guaranteed equal and fair opportunities with all my fellow students without any form of discrimination.

In conclusion, the United States Constitution establishes the country’s governing structure and spells out each citizen’s rights. The founding fathers’ Constitution is built on the foundation of American ideals. These ideals include liberty and democracy, which all American citizens highly value in the country. The 1964 Civil Rights Act’s Title VII, which inspired the majority of the American public, is an example of constitutionally protected civil rights that ensures that I have a good learning experience with no discrimination due to my country of origin. Therefore, I believe that I will have a good stay here, and I will be in an excellent position to study effectively.
